Physical Characteristics

The Bulldog (also known as the English Bulldog or British Bulldog) is a solid piece of work. There is nothing dainty about this dog with his mammoth head, well muscled body, broad shoulders and sturdy legs he more resembles a small tank. The Bulldog head has loose skin on the cheeks and forehead that hangs and gives him a jowly, wrinkled brow look of deep consternation. He has a flattened nose and a short muzzle. The Bulldogs eyes are wide set and round, and very dark in color. The Bulldogs lower jaw is undershot.  His ears are small, folded back and form the shape of a rose bud. The Bulldog has a short, dense and sleek coat that lays flat on his stocky body. The coat colors are fawn, brindle, faded red, pale yellow or white. Black is not an accepted color by most kennel clubs for this breed.

Size

There is no height minimum or maximum for the Bulldog but they usually range somewhere between 12 and 16 in. tall at the withers when they reach maturity. Male Bulldogs weigh between 53 and 55 lbs when mature and female Bulldogs weigh between 49 and 51 lbs. Bulldogs that are shorter with wider heads are generally more prized for the show ring.
